Client overview
Crocus is a legal-tech platform that helps people handle prenups and estate planning through guided, AI-assisted chats and forms, along with a consultation of legal experts within the platform.
Problem
The client approached us with several challenges: 1) onboarding was a long static form that converted poorly from the main website; 2) the product dashboard tried to show everything at once, leaving users without understanding what the next step was; 3) to complete the prenup documents users had to get through a 10-page questionnaire across 3 sections, and many lost focus along the way.
Key decisions
Onboarding as a first taste of the product
Challenge: Onboarding was a long static form. Both the client and our UX audit flagged it: users had to answer a lot before getting anything back.
Decision: Crocus's core product is legal consultation in chat, so I redesigned onboarding as a chat flow too. It eases users into that experience from the first step: each question is explained before it's asked, and suggested answers adapt to what the user has already said.
A 10-page questionnaire nobody wants to fill in
Challenge: The questionnaire ran 10 pages across 3 sections, full of legal terms users don't understand.
Decision: I moved it into the platform and made it help the user: fields prefilled by AI from earlier answers, a recommendation on each question, and a chat available on any field for when they get stuck.
AI that advises but never decides
Challenge: In legal matters, AI can't tell users what to do. It can only recommend, and every final decision has to be validated by a licensed lawyer.
Decision: I designed every AI recommendation to cite the references it's based on and to come with a disclaimer to consult a specialist. That consultation can be booked right on the platform, so the disclaimer leads to the next step instead of being a dead end.
A dashboard that tells you where you are
Challenge: The dashboard showed everything at once, although clients go through clear stages: questionnaire, review, lawyer consultation, signing and so on.
Decision: I mapped each stage of the client's journey and designed 12 dashboard states, one per stage. Each shows what's done and what comes next, so users always understand where they are in the process.
I also restructured the design system and Figma files to be MCP-friendly, which sped up the handoff to development.
Impact
The redesigned platform and website launched in the first 3 months. On this foundation, Crocus launched a second product, Estate Planning, and the company raised another investment round.
